Mainstays (Walmart) 3-wick Candle

I've heard a couple YouTube scent lovers say that the Mainstays brand 3-wick candles found at Walmart are surprisingly good.  I decided to check them out yesterday.  Amazingly affordable, these 11.5 oz. candles are only $3.25!  There were maybe ten scents or so, mostly fruits and florals.  I almost got the Black Cherry but then decided to go with this . . . Garden Rain.  Described as 'that just-rained smell, with hints of white rose, apple blossom and water lily,' there really is a sort of 'rain' note to this.  It is floral but there is a sweetness, and a sort of ocean or ozone hint, sort of fresh and clean too.

We were pleasantly surprised with how strong the scent throw was from this candle!  One of the reasons I prefer tarts is that candles are usually too weak for my liking.  You also don't have to deal with tunneling or making sure you've burned the candle long enough or any of the other hassles that can come with candles.  This one burned perfectly.  We were amazed how quickly a flawless, even wax pool formed.  Maybe one of the downfalls might be that it burns TOO fast.  We're not sure yet.  But within an hour there was this lovely pool across the whole four inch surface.  It quickly scented not only our large living room, but most of the downstairs of our house.  Awesome!  We let it burn all evening without any problems.
As you can see, it burned smooth and clear, barely any residue on the sides and no soot around the edges.  I will absolutely be getting more of these candles in other scents!  At only $3.25 each, you'd be crazy not to at least give one a try.  I'm really hoping they come out with seasonal scents.  Ooooh, I'm excited now!

(This post is only referring to the 3-wick style candles, not the Mainstays brand in general.  I don't remember trying any of the other styles or sizes that are available, so I don't know how good or bad those are.)

Have YOU tried these Mainstays 3-wick candles from Walmart?  What did you think?  I'd love to hear!

  1. Wow, the colors in the side view with the melted wax are so pretty -- the bright blue at the top reminds me of the ocean in the Caribbean. I'm ready for another vacation!

  2. Ha, cool. I'm not a beachy, watery type person, so I guess my vacation inspiring candle would have to be white and brown marble to somehow bring about the idea of snowy mountains. LOL

  3. I've tried the Hazelnut Cream 11.5oz. three wick and it smells delicious. A really nice warm but not to strong scent with a hint of sweetness. This is definitely a keeper. I started using the Mainstays product line after the hubby bought me one in Warm Apple Pie 20oz. After the first use I had to get more. The only con about the 20oz jar is the soot around the rim when it get low (down to 4 oz).

  4. The one is this post was amazing. It burned flawlessly and had great scent throw. I had faith in this product, so I bought two in fall scents and both were failures. We ended up using a candle warmer and just melting them that way. Now I'm leery about trying any others.

I have not tried the large jar ones. I've used the tiny little jar ones, and they've been nice to have sitting right here on the desk or next to wherever I'm sitting.

    1. That sucks. I don't like pillar candles and will probably never buy one again. I don't even really like large jar candles. I definitely prefer smaller ones. I absolutely love mini jelly jar candles, like what Candles By Victoria and Tiffany Candles have.

  6. I also tried the Mainstays cherry 2 oz jar candle. I bought this last week for 2.5 dollars. But no fragrance at all. So anyone suggest me to buy a 3 wick mainstays candle?

    1. Bummer that there was no fragrance. I had such good luck with this one, but then a different scent I tried later was a big failure.

I don't know which scents are best in this candle, but they're cheap enough to go ahead and try again. =)

    2. Nice to see your reply. Next time I'll try this garden rain. I need atleast 30 small size candles to gift my family. As this is pretty much cheap and saw some good review I opted this Mainstays. Now I'm planning to try Glade candles. Have u tried Glade? Now walmart is selling 40z glade for less than 3 dollars

    3. I have tried Glade, yes. I have several posts about Glade candles here on my blog. I love them. I also like the Febreze ones but they cost a little more. I have a couple posts about them here too.

  7. Love these candles, but wicks seems to burn out and leave lots of wax with no wick to light. What's that about?

    1. Hmm, I'm no candle expert so I can't say for sure. Do you trim your wicks? Maybe you're trimming them too short?

  9. Hello!

Those two were probably seasonal scents for the fall. They might be back this fall, or something similar to them. Maybe you can find some on eBay?

    3. Thanks for letting him/her know. =)

Their whole line of fall scents is available at Walmart now. I love the Apple Pumpkin one, and the Maple Glazed Apples is nice too.

  11. I am currently burning a "Wild Honeysuckle" three wick candle in the furniture showroom I work. It smells like spring & I forget the snow outside. I also burned the "Mulled Cider" over Christmas & was very pleased how the scent fills a large area. I have never experienced candles that through so much scent!

    1. This is one of the most popular posts on my blog. The surprises me.

I had good luck with this one, but a different scent I had later was a dud both in scent throw and actual burning performance. I'll have to take a look, see what scents catch my eye these days, and try another.

  13. Hello, I used to love these candles also. They were very fragrant for the cheap price but I've noticed the past 3 months or so that they now smell like wax and are less smelly. I wonder why

    1. It's been quite some time since I've last tried these 3-wick candles. I should get another one to see if I have the same weak results. Hmm. Maybe they've changed their formula or something?

I've become very disappointed in the scents..There doesn't seem to be much . I've bought them for years . Now that I'm on disability the only way to get them is to save enough for 2 months then get ten at a time because I don't drive anymore so my grandgrandaughter does all my errands. The last few times the scent was so weak NOT 1 person came in and said my house smelled good. They always did before..The price was perfect for me. I not going to spend money for candles I can't smell.

    3. Hello, Virginia!
I was surprised with how strong the Mainstays wax melts were in 2015's fall and Christmas scents. I wonder if the candles might be stronger again now? I never did try one again last time I said I would.

Have you tried the wax melts?
