It's kind of a lacking holiday here this year, for many reasons. Mainly it's the heat and the dry conditions. We're continuing to have weirdly high temps for our area, and continuing to have very little rain. Temps have been in the mid to upper 90s for days now and there is no letting up until possibly this weekend. I'm glad now that I finally caved and bought that dang air conditioner! Add our near drought conditions to that and many communities have postponed or cancelled their fireworks shows, and are asking the people do not light off fireworks at home. And then add the fact that the holiday falls right smack in the middle of the week this year. Bleah all around.
Ty's crew has decided to go ahead and work today so they can have a four day weekend instead. He normally works four ten-hour days and has Fridays off. So they asked the boss if they could just work today and instead have their holiday on Thursday, thus giving the four day weekend. Because first shift (a normal five day crew) is off today, Ty's crew is going in early. Instead of starting at 4:30pm, they are starting at 12:30pm. Regardless, he won't be here for our little cookout or our piddly little 'safe' fireworks.
So, my mom is coming over this afternoon and we'll have a little cookout, just a few burgers and brats and some deli side dishes. She'll probably stay a few hours and chitchat and watch TV. After she leaves we'll light the handful of cheap little smoke bombs and ash snakes we bought this morning, then kill some time by playing the online game we're hooked on lately . . . and lounge in what comfort our new air conditioner can give us . . . until it's dark enough to light the few tiny 'fountain' fireworks we have. I've put a big red, white, and blue ribbon on the hook outside the back door and we have a lighted flag thing in the window. Rather boring for a 4th of July, but at least it's something.
What are you doing on this scorching summer holiday?

Happy 4th Deb! It's really hot here too. I spent my 4th working and then huddling in front of the fan and spritzing myself with cold water!
ReplyDeleteHeee, you should have gone to the mall and browsed B&BW for about 8 hours.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow is supposed to be our hottest day . . . predictions of 101 degrees. YUCK!!! Then down to mid-90s on Friday, and low-80s for the weekend and beyond. Woohoo! Hope this heat takes a break for a while.

Cool graphic!
ReplyDeleteWell hey, you did more 4th-related stuff than we did. We've been really un-4th-y forever though, for one reason or another each year. Brad was in the parade up in Minocqua though, with the Masonic Lodge. Did I ever tell you he became a Mason? Can't remember.
Has the air conditioner/power been problem-free since the first issue?
Have you guys had rain yet? Tom said the other day (he texted me a bit) that it hadn't rained in forever by you; we got some this week, but not a lot. Crops aren't doing well at all down here.
Nope, you didn't tell me he was a Mason. We don't talk anymore, remember?
ReplyDeleteThe boys say the AC still trips the power once in a while but they now know how to go down to the creepy dungeon and reset it. I've glad I bought it because it HAS saved loads of bitchy discomfort but I still want to get central air.
We are indeed drought-stricken here but we are not in the worst part of it. We FINALLY had rain last week, a whole day of alternating rain and drizzle. We still need tons more, but that was enough to perk things up a bit.

Hey, guess what! Brad's been a Mason for probably a year and a half.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know what being a Mason means, but 'Cool!' I guess. :P
ReplyDelete~Deb
Well it means he knows all the secrets of the universe and the history of mankind and the whereabouts of the offspring of Jesus, of course! ;-p
ReplyDeleteThey have regular meetings and do charity work and learn about the history of the organization & its values and have ceremonies as guys advance and fraternize in outlandish ways like sitting around drinking coffee.
He's also become a leader in the youth organization tied to it.
HA! Funny you say that first part because I was thinking 'Something with Jesus, or religion, or Da Vinci Code, or Templar Knights or something . . . '
ReplyDelete~Deb
Lol, yeah!
